Air Duct Repair

Got a room that's always too hot or too cold? Your ducts might be the problem. We see it all the time in older Glendale homes - torn flex duct, disconnected runs, leaky connections. Basically you're paying to cool air that never makes it to your living room. Common problem in Adams Hill, Glenoaks Canyon, all those 1960s ranches.

Fixing What's Actually Wrong

Think about it: your AC and furnace push air through ducts in your attic where it's 140 degrees in summer. Electricians walk on them. Cable guys kick them aside. Pest control guys crawl over them. Stuff gets disconnected. Flex duct gets crushed. Tape fails after 15 years.

We crawl around up there (not fun, but that's the job) and find where you're losing conditioned air. Last month in Tropico we found a duct that was completely disconnected from the main trunk - homeowner had been cooling his attic for probably 5 years straight. His energy bills dropped noticeably after we reconnected it.

What We Do Up There

Here's the kind of work we handle in Glendale attics every week.

  • Seal the Leaks

Every connection point is a potential leak. We hit them all with mastic and foil tape - not that gray cloth stuff from Home Depot that falls off in 18 months. Sealing typically runs $400-800 depending on how many connections you have.

  • Fix the Damage

Crushed flex duct, holes from roof work, connections that came apart - we've seen it all. Most repairs run $200-600. Sometimes it's a $50 fix, sometimes we need to run new lines.

  • Replace When Needed

Sometimes the ductwork's just too far gone. Or it was undersized from day one - we see a lot of 6-inch runs that should be 8-inch. Full duct replacement runs $2,500-5,000 but it's worth it if yours is shot.

  • Add Insulation

Bare ducts in a hot attic lose a ton of cooling before it even reaches your vents. We wrap them with R-8 insulation. Makes a big difference when that attic's hitting 150 degrees in August.

How Do You Know There's a Problem?

If any of this sounds familiar, it might be your ducts:

  • That one room that's always 10 degrees warmer than the rest of your house
  • Energy bill jumped $50-100/month but you haven't changed anything
  • Way more dust than usual - especially around the vents
  • Weak airflow from some registers (hold a tissue up - it should blow out horizontally)
  • Rattling or whistling when the system kicks on
  • You went up in the attic and saw something that didn't look right

Let's Take a Look

We'll crawl up there and show you exactly what's going on - usually with photos. Inspection's free if we end up doing the work. Either way you'll know what you're dealing with.
